About the Book

Language

One doesn't use a script when engaging in a normal conversation. The vocabulary, grammar, and proper accent are internalized. The sooner the drummer can internalize the language of jazz drumming, the more quickly he or she will be able to speak it fluently. This book takes the student through this gradual process of internalization.

Origins of This Book

This book is the result of needing solutions to educational problems I've encountered with my students over the years. The problems centered around the inability of many students to actually internalize and own the jazz drumming language.

The failure would occur after having them read and execute pages of written jazz rhythm material on the drum set. It didn't work for most of them. I decided to find a less reading-intensive way to teach them the language. I've used this approach now for many years with great success and decided to put this approach in a book for other students to use.
