Anatomy of an Exercise

Notation

Notation used in Interalization

Internalization uses standard drum notation through the book. Above is a sample staff explaining the notation of each drum or cymbal. The ride is drawn on the top space of the staff, while the hi-hat foot is noted on the bottom space. In between, the snare drum falls on the 2nd space from the top and the bass drum is 2nd from the bottom.

Ostinato

A simple jazz ride and hi-hat ostiato.

The is the ostinato, which is to be played as a constant and unchanging part along with the elements. This particular ostinato involves the ride cymbal and the hi-hat.

Elements A and B

Element A on the snare, Element B on the bass

These are 2 elements used in this particular exercise. These elements involve the snare and bass drum and are to be played in which ever sequence you choose from the sequences section of this book.

Example

Full exercise with elements A and B over the Ostiato.

This is the example, which is a completely transcribed version of the above two elements (A and B) as combined with the above ostinato and sequence #2 from the 8-note sequences section of the book.
